  1. Thank you for this post. I suppose that libraries are oftenseen as a waste of taxpayers’ money, especially now that we have the impressive (and sometimes mixed) resources of the net. But the paradox here is that public libraries help cultivate the *private* life by encouraging reading and independent thought. In the silence of our libraries, readers become better at handling the noisy demands of our society. RT
