Guadalupe Regional Medical Center – Emergency Department

The second phase of the GRMC’s extensive expansion is quite impressive.  The Emergency Department includes a wound care center, imaging, and several other departments.

At the official ribbon cutting on Jan. 20, GRMC Chief Executive Officer Robert Haynes said he is very happy that the second stage of the hospital expansion is finished.

“My mission is to give this community the hospital it deserves,” Haynes said. “This is your hospital Seguin, and I am very proud of it. In a clinical aspect of the emergency room, from what we had to what we have now is like night and day. I’m very excited. The goal is to get the project completely finished by July. So far we are on target with our two-year deadline and we are doing great.” [Katie Collins, The Seguin Gazette Enterprise]

The $102 million project began January 2008 and includes an extensive rehabilitation and expansion of the hospital, which originally opened in 1965, nearly doubling the size of the campus to roughly 260,000 square feet of space – including 141,000 square feet of new space.  This was an ambitious project and is nearing completion.  It is a first-rate facility.

The project was funded by a HUD insured loan, not taxpayer funding.  The loan will be repaid through hospital revenue and donations through the GRMC Foundation’s capital campaign.

The three-story in-patient  tower houses maternity services and the medical floor. Every patient room in the tower is private and has large reflective windows allowing natural sunlight in.

There are six surgical suites.

The maternity services floor is triple the size of the previous maternity area and includes a large newborn nursery and 14 private rooms for mothers and their families.

On the second floor, the new medical unit includes 34 beds and a second-story view. There is also a four-bed suite for patients who need 24-hour monitoring. Hospital Director Robert Haynes said the expansion may be ultra-modern, but the staff’s dedication to patients remains old-fashioned.The Medical Center’s active medical staff includes more than 60 physicians, specializing in 30 specialties, and 700 employees serving the residents of Guadalupe County and seven other counties.

GRMC contributes more than $30 million per year to the local economy in salaries and benefits, more than$7 million in services for those unable to pay for healthcare, and $4.5 million in community benefits.
